The Muskox Farmer

Fay Archive - Field Test #17

PALMER, ALASKA

The relationship between humans, animals and nature is particularly significant in this part of the Earth. On a large farm at the heart of southern Alaska's immense plains, we meet Michael, a passionate breeder of the mighty, thick-coated musk oxen. "Probably, the most important thing on the farm is not necessarily what we do, but how we do it."

"I think one of the most interesting things about musk oxen is their incredible durability. They're hardy and strong, go through winters with temperatures below 80 degrees and with very strong winds without needing food, and somehow they manage to survive."

The dedication and passion with which Michael tames these animals are tangible; everything he does conveys a profound sense of respect for them. We accompany him during a typical day on the farm, where every single action masks a meticulous ritual.
