On the island of Hokkaido, Yukata Takada’s life is strongly connected to the sea and nature. In fact, during the fourth leg of their Japan adventure, the Fay Archive team quite literally caught him repairing the nets of local fishing boats in Abashiri.

The Fay Archive team's journey in Japan continues. Here we are in Abashiri Harbour in the north-eastern part of the island of Hokkaido, where Marukawa Asakura Shoten, the captain of a trawler sailing through the ice, lives. At night, when the temperatures fall and forecasting along the route is tricky, the journey is difficult.

FIELD TEST NO. 32

The Fay Archive team's latest trip starts in the remotest areas of Japan. We've reached the southeastern area of the island of Hokkaido, in the spa city of Noboribetsu, where Kazuya Omiya manages an Onsen; a typical Japanese spa with an impressive nine thermal springs. He is the first Field Tester to guide us along the journey.

The journey into Canada at its most extreme continues. A lakeside haven, deep in the forest: the site where we meet Inuit sculptor Billy Gauthier. The artist spends a lot of time in close contact with nature, which is where he sources both his inspiration and materials for his works of art made from local wood and stone.

Salmon Bay Farm is a plot of land on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, on the northern coast of Quebec. It is here that the Roberts family has farmed scallops and caught lobsters for generations aboard a motor boat that their father built 20 years ago.

To the south of the island of Newfoundland – at Cape St Mary's to be exact – the gannets, a.k.a. herring gulls, -return to breed each year. Luka is a photographer and researcher who, during his seasonal expeditions across the rocky and unspoilt areas of this oasis, follows the bird migration patterns and keeps track of them.

The last stop in Nepal. Upon their return to Kathmandu – at the end of a long journey that took them through valleys, mountains and plateaus from Mustang to Langtang Valley – the Fay Archive team met up with Chhedup Bomzan, the founder of the Jazzmandu Festival.

FIELD TEST NO. 26

In Chitwan National Park, the Fay Archive team met up with 'conservationist' DB Chowdry, the mind behind the area’s vulture protection programme. Once decimated by an antibiotic found in the meat of the cows they were feasting on, these animals can now safely eat, whilst also preserving the environment and preventing epidemics from developing.

In the Mustang region – at approx. 3000 MASL – lies a place so remote and isolated that it doesn’t even have a name. It is here that the Fay Archive team met Deepak, a shepherd who lives in a stone hut, perched on the mountain.

The small city of Pokhara is the starting point of one of most dangerous roads in the world. This unpaved route ascends for hundreds of kilometres along the cliffs towards Jomsom: and it is here that the Fay Archive team hopped aboard Dev Tamang’s bus.

Our journey took us to the easternmost part of Nepal, which shares its border with China, to meet Pema, a researcher at Kathmandu University who dedicates herself to her cause: protecting the red panda. She works closely with local communities to raise awareness and recreate a hospitable habitat for this endangered species.

A pristine pasture and sacred lake-filled region, overlooking peaks and glaciers. In Nepal's Langtang Valley – a place hit hard by the 2015 earthquake, which sits at an altitude that will quite literally take your breath away – the Fay Archive team met up with Sherpas Sonam and Onghu. They were the first Field Testers to help us reach new heights.

FIELD TEST #8

Every day, Lawrie sets out to explore the North Sea waters in the vicinity of Dunbar, in North East Scotland. His daily routine is set by the rhythm of the waves breaking on the “Tangaroa”, his main fishing boat. A blustery wind blows along these coasts in spring and summer and the temperatures can vary significantly.

Rolf manufactures boats: in the small sheds of his yard the wood comes to life thanks to his handcraft, turning into something unique.
