Polar Bear Guard

BARROW, ALASKA

Glacial temperatures and endless expanses of snow help to frame the life of our next tester. We’re in Barrow (Utqiagvik in the local language), at the northern tip of Alaska, where Eiben, an Iñupiat native and a polar bear guardian, lives. A fascinating and decidedly unique profession. “Here in the far north the temperatures can drop to -70° F.” We follow him with excitement and curiosity until we see one of these extraordinary animals.

“When there’s a small polar bear around, I take my camera equipment and fly my drone [...]. Getting this kind of content [...] is a rewarding feeling, [...] it’s something that doesn’t happen to many people”.

Reaching Barrow is “an expedition within an expedition” but the experience we have thanks to Eiben is well worth the long journey. “When there’s a small polar bear around, I take my camera equipment and fly my drone [...]. Getting this kind of content [...] is a rewarding feeling, [...] it’s something that doesn’t happen to many people”. We instantly think that many videos and images we have seen and enjoyed about these polar creatures could have been taken by him.
