Boat Captain

Fay Archive - Field Test No. 19

WHITTIER, ALASKA

We set sail aboard the Babkin, Alexandra’s boat, who is the captain and third tester of our expedition. We are in the Prince William Sound area, a stretch of sea surrounded by rugged mountains overlooking the Gulf of Alaska and the waters of the Pacific Ocean. “I support a few research groups. [...] We can learn from them, see what is happening and how the climate has changed over the years.”

“In the last 5 years, the receding of these glaciers has really been an environmental catastrophe and it’s almost as if the ice is super-heating.”

At these latitudes the panorama is breathtaking. Nature exudes all its power. Listening to Alexandra allows us to realise how much the setting that surrounds us and that we’re immersed in has changed significantly in a short amount of time. “In the last 5 years, the receding of these glaciers has really been an environmental catastrophe and it’s almost as if the ice is super-heating.” We catch her sensitive gaze when she points to the area where “There used to be a layer of snow that helped regenerate the ice layer and now it’s no longer there.”
